High-temperature alloy is a metal material with excellent properties in high-temperature environments and is widely used in aerospace, energy, chemical industry and other fields. However, during the trial production of some foreign high-temperature alloy grades, we found that the mechanical properties of some alloys were unqualified or the hot workability was poor. In order to solve these problems, we try to add trace elements, such as magnesium, zirconium or calcium, on the basis of foreign chemical compositions to improve the properties of the alloy.
GH4220 alloy is a precipitation-strengthened deformed nickel-based high-temperature alloy with complex composition. Its chemical composition is the same as that of the former Soviet Union’s ЭП220 alloy. This alloy can be used to make aero-engine turbine blades that operate at 900°C. However, during the domestic trial production process, we found that the high-temperature tensile plasticity and durable strength of the prepared rods could not meet the technical standards of the former Soviet Union. To solve this problem, we added trace amounts of magnesium to the alloy, which solved the problem. At the same time, we also used the bending grain boundary process for heat treatment to further improve the plasticity and strength.
GH4698 alloy is a precipitation-strengthened turbine disk alloy with the same composition as the former Soviet Union’s ЭП698 alloy and can be used at 750°C for a long time. During the domestic trial production process, we used two smelting processes, namely vacuum induction furnace plus vacuum consumable remelting and vacuum induction furnace plus electroslag remelting process, to produce the plate. However, at 750°C, the alloy exhibits persistent notch sensitivity. In order to solve this problem, we added trace amounts of magnesium and zirconium to the ЭИ698 alloy, and adopted envelope forging and envelope die forging processes, which successfully eliminated the persistent notch sensitivity and improved the hot forming performance.
The chemical composition of GH4099 alloy is equivalent to the ЭП99 alloy of the former Soviet Union. It is a precipitation-strengthened nickel-based plate high-temperature alloy used for high-temperature components such as afterburning cylinders that are used for a long time at 800-900°C. However, during the trial production process, we found that the alloy has poor hot workability, poor cold forming, high deformation resistance and low mechanical properties. In order to solve these problems, we adopted the method of Mg microalloying and combined it with reasonable thermal processing technology and heat treatment system for improvement. Through these measures, we have successfully made the plates we produce meet the technical requirements and reach the physical level of the former Soviet Union.
The chemical composition of GH4141 alloy used in space rocket engines is the same as that of American Rent41. By adding trace elements magnesium and calcium, we significantly improved the hot workability and mechanical properties of the alloy. This improvement has allowed the alloy to be widely used in the aerospace field.
Based on the trial production of foreign alloys, we used micro-alloying methods and cooperated with our own developed optimization process to successfully overcome the shortcomings of some foreign alloys such as unqualified mechanical properties and poor hot processing plasticity. We have trial-produced high-temperature alloys suitable for domestic needs, which is an innovative achievement.
Overall, we succeeded in improving the properties of superalloys by adding trace elements and optimizing the process. This innovative method provides new ideas and directions for the research and development and production of high-temperature alloys in my country. We believe that with the continuous advancement of technology and the promotion of innovation, my country’s high-temperature alloy industry will usher in broader development prospects.
